During the last major Hurricane of the season Costa Rica was hit hard by the rains that just seemed to stay in one place. After three-four days of torrential downpours the ground could not hold anymore and began to break apart in many areas of the country. Mudslides occurred all over the country. Two particular areas badly hit were right in the area of where we have churches and many IPHC family members. Homes were destroyed and people killed. One sister in our church in Escazu lost twenty extended family members who all lived in the path of the mudslides. Our heart goes out to these families. Thank God for pastors like Joaquin Quesada our International CURSUM director. Joaquin’s church is one right in the area in San Antonio de Escazu. We also have another church, Carmen de Escazu which also was in the area. Both churches have helped in housing and aiding the victims of the slides.
Our own buildings in Santa Ana where we have our conference offices and our large multipurpose building were also affected. The river that runs behind these two buildings cut all the ground away leaving the building at risk of being washed away. An emergency construction company was hired to go in to rebuild a retaining wall at a cost of $47,000. This is a project that neither the Costa Ricans nor the LAMCAR budget can afford.
